Over 160,000 children miss school every day for fear of being bullied. This reality has led to the alarming increase in suicides among children and teens. These negative trends have captured national attention and researchers have discovered the direct correlation between lack of empathy and all forms of violence.

Maia Szalavitz wrote in Time Magazine’s April 2010 issue, “ Over the past decade, research in empathy – the ability to put ourselves in another person’s shoes – has suggested that it is key, if not the key to all human social interaction and morality. Neuroscientists, psychologists and educators believe that encouraging empathy at an early age can reduce bullying and other kinds of violence.”

With 85% of the personality being formed by age twelve, we believe to change the direction of society we must shape the hearts of our children in grade school. The children’s book, look at me; I am just like you, has been used by school counselors and teachers to teach over 15,000 children respect for self and others, empathy and teamwork. Teacher surveys indicate that the story along with the activities guide has markedly increased empathy among their students.

Today, we are asking business leaders, like you, to help us “Turn The Tide” and directly help educators increase empathy among their students. By partnering with the Open My Eyes Foundation, your tax-deductible gift of $60 will place 3 books in 3 schools. Our goal is to place books in all 1107 of Alabama’s elementary schools.

Thank you in advance for joining with us to help “Turn The Tide.” Each book that you donate will have a bookplate placed in it to recognize your company’s contribution.
