Abigail discovered in searching for grants, programs and sponsors that could help her, that many organizations did not support projects that did not already have non-profit status with the Internal Revenue Service. In other cases, the application requirements for funding were complex and overwhelming. She was also hearing from teachers and administrators that more programs, initiatives, materials etc. were needed in the area of character development. They indicated that most of their problems in the classroom were as a result of lack of character development in their students.

In addition to her own project and on-going development of activities, she discovered other people with great ideas and possible programs that would contribute to society. Inspired by so many people she met, Abigail decided to start a non-profit foundation that would serve as a support for her own and other small “grassroots” projects. Presently, she is pursuing private donations, other grants, and corporate giving in order to be able to offer needed financial help for these start-up projects. She has started a student organization at the University of Alabama that has as its goal to bring public awareness to the Foundation and expose college students to ways they can get involved.

Thanks to her own experience, the Open My Eyes Foundation will not require applicants to have 501c(3) status, and applications will be considered throughout the year. The form and criteria required for project proposals will be manageable for those who do not have experience in writing grant proposals. The foundation will adopt projects that have character development as their focus.
